Creating a healthier home environment is a priority for me and my family, and that starts with what I use to clean. Ditching harsh chemicals doesn’t mean sacrificing a sparkling clean that smells amazing! Here are my tried-and-true non-toxic cleaning product recommendations that I use in my home on the regular.
I would like to preface by saying, “non-toxic” is a term that at times is thrown around lightly at times, for the sake of sales. The term “non-toxic” is NOT regulated, meaning companies can label any of their products as “non-toxic” just because they want to. This article here goes a little more in-depth about that little factoid, and touches on the law-suit that had been filed against Method brand over their “misleading labeling of being non-toxic” in 2020 (a time when we questioned everything in the world).
Another bit of information I’ll share before getting into my favorite “non-toxic” products, is that this blog post here covers everything “Method” brand. Greenhive does a good job of going in depth on each of the “chemical ingredients” in Method products. My personal opinion is that I find Method products to be less harsh and chemically than the traditional cleaning products that many of us were raised on. Such as Lysol, Clorox, etc. I picked my poison so to say. I am not here to sell you on a specific brand or product, only share my honest option as well as some facts that I’ve uncovered in my own research.
The author of My Chemical Free House outlines alot of important information in this article where they got the input from a toxicologist on the matter. Check it out >> here.
As a nurse, I come in contact with so many cleaning chemicals as well as germs on a daily basis, all I can do it try my best to make my home environment as clean, healthy, and as free of harsh chemicals as I am able to within reason.
My go-to Household Cleaning Products
- Product: Method Daily Granite Cleaner (Apple Orchard)
- Why I Love It: When I first got my counter tops I was afraid of using cleaners that would wipe away the top coating of the granite over time. So I did my research into products that were made to use on granite counters, and came across this Method product. The smell is *chefs kiss*, and my counters still look shiny and new 3 years later!
- How I Use It: I keep a bottle under my skin for a daily countertop wipe down after a long day of hustling through the kitchen and cooking various meals.
- Product:Method Antibac Multipurpose Spray (Bamboo)
- Why I Love It:ย This spray works to kill 99.9% of germs and viruses, just like the other surface cleaning products that we’re use to using, but this one is made of all natural, non-toxic ingredients. And also smells so fresh and clean
- How I Use It:ย I use this on my counter tops as well as other frequently touched surfaces in my house. I don’t use it on my counters every day, as I want to maintain the topcoat of the granite. But will use it to desensitize the surfaces after I’ve had company over or prepared a meal using raw meats.
- Product:ย Method Wood Cleaner (Almond)
- Why I Love It: This natural wood surface cleaning spray leaves surfaces like dining room tables, decorative tables, and even my stairway banisters looking shiny and clean. Almond is one of my favorite scents so that’s a bonus!
- How I Use It: I’ll spray down my dining room table one a week (or more frequently depending on use), and my other wooden surfaces to keep up with dust and overall upkeep. I’ll either use a paper towel or microfiber cloth. This helps to collect the dust on the surfaces as I go along.
- Product:ย Grove Collaborative Daily Shower Spray Concentrate (Lemon & Eucalyptus)
- Why I Love It: The fact that you activate it with tap water and a capsule is brilliant! It’s EPA registered for disinfecting and sanitizing, which gives me peace of mind, especially with kids and pets. Plus, it smells clean without being overpowering.
- How I Use It: This is my go-to for wiping down kitchen counters, door handles, and anywhere that needs a good clean and disinfection.
- Product:Seventh Generation Dish Soap
- Why I Love It: It cuts grease really well and doesn’t leave my hands feeling dry and irritated like some other dish soaps. I also appreciate their commitment to sustainable practices.
- How I Use It: Everyday dishwashing, of course! It’s a staple at my kitchen sink.
- Product:ย Aunt Fannieโs Baking Soda & Vinegar
- Why I Love It:ย Talk about budget-friendly and effective! This classic combo is amazing for scrubbing sinks, cleaning drains, and deodorizing. It’s a powerful non-toxic duo.
- How I Use It:ย I make a paste with baking soda for scrubbing or pour vinegar down the drain followed by baking soda for what feels like a fun, middle school science experiment!
